City striker talks to worcestercityfc.com

worcestercityfc.com: Tell us a little about yourself

I live in Cannock, just north of Birmingham. I've played pro-football for the last 8 years and went semi-pro 2 seasons ago when I joined Altrincham. I enjoy the many arts and music and would describe myself as an honest person who wears my heart on my sleeve. I’m now 30 years old and 6’4.

worcestercityfc.com : What do you do aside from playing football?

I work as a freelance graphic designer, working from home. I also front a function and wedding band. I love being on stage. I play guitar and love writing and playing music. I've toured the UK a whole bunch and played with some great bands. I love being creative. I'm very passionate, driven and love to put on a show.
My little boy is my absolute world. I'm a single Dad with a 3 year old son, so spending as much time as possible with him is really important to me. I'm a big family man.

worcestercityfc.com: When you take to the field, you look like a man with a point to prove. Would you say that's a fair assumption?

Yes, however, I don’t feel like I have a point to prove to others per say, I just have a burning fire inside that doesn't do anything by halves. I'm definitely relishing the opportunity next season. I'm working really hard this summer to get myself fit and ready for the new campaign. I think last season was a write off. It was a real rough crack. I was performing and scoring goals but I wasn't having a good time at Hednesford. There was a lot of instability, with 4 managers in a matter of months. When the opportunity came up to join Worcester, Carl put me in and got me in the mix. I've been carrying an ankle injury, but being a big lad I've made a nuisance of myself and feel like i've positively effected the games.

worcestercityfc.com: Do you have any pre-match superstitions?

I don't think so, or none that i'm concious of. Just, when the first whilstle blows, I'm hit with a rush of adrenaline. You just kick on! You could have an injury, the whislte blows and you do everything in your power to get the 3 points. I've never been one to turn up and fob a game off. I'm determined and I play every game as if it's a cup final.

worcestercityfc.com: What 3 tunes get you up for a game?

I love a bit of rock, so Queen – 'Don't Stop Me Now', ELO – 'Mr Blue Sky' and Woodkid – 'Run By Run'. Also, a bit of orchestral really gets you going. An old manager at Mansfield used to blast orchestral pieces in the changing room before the game and it made you feel like a God amongst men. You puffed your chest out and felt as though you could beat anyone!

worcestercityfc.com: What's been the most important game in your career?

I was 21 and playing for Chasetown and had a couple of pro-clubs watching me. We were on a great FA Cup run at the time and I'd scored a couple of goals in the lead up to the 3rd round, which had great media coverage, where we drew Cardiff at home. We went 1-0 up. A cross came in and I wrestled with McNaughton and he ended up kicking it in to his own net. The second half was a different story though and we ended up losing 1-3.
It was mad playing in front of so many footballing legends - I remember looking over to the front row and seeing Trevor Brooking and Nick Hancock. I lived it all again later on Match Of The Day.
On the Tuesday we played Osset Albion in front of 150 people and my Dad was watching with the family dog, Tag. Port Vale then offered me a contract on the Thursday. I went in to work on the Friday, told them I was leaving and put my plant in my box and then made my debut away at Swansea City in front of 30,000. The atmosphere was incredible.

worcestercityfc.com: What teams have you played for along the way?

Walsall, Telford, Willenhall, Chase Town, Port Vale, Mansfield Town, Tamworth, Lincoln City, Nuneaton, Hereford, Altrincham, Hednesford and now Worcester.

worcestercityfc.com: If you could have any meal, what would you have?

It'd have to be a mixed grill. Medium.

worcestercityfc.com: What's been the funniest thing you have seen happen on a football pitch?

A lot of the officiating has been borderline comical at times in recent seasons, but i couldn’t choose just one moment as there has been so many... From a Player urinating during a game, to a Keeper taking off their shorts and shirt before the final whistle and playing in skins, to a 22 man brawl and everybody trying to get a rat off the pitch - I've probably seen it all.

worcestercityfc.com: If you could own any car, what would you have?

The Tumbler '’Batmobile’'.

worcestercityfc.com: What football team do you support?

It was Walsall when I was growing up, but now it's Worcester City!

worcestercityfc.com: And finally, what are your expectations for the 2016-17 season?

Anything below play offs to me, personally, would be a disappointment. As i say, I’m not here just for the ride, I want success. From a personal stand point, I know that if I can play in 80% of the games and stay fit, I'll be scoring 20 goals plus and setting up a hell of a lot more.
